The Role

Applications are now invited for the position of Family Advisor.  The appointee to this role will train as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner and will complete the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution.  The position holder is responsible for providing initial information, assessment, referral and limited counselling to strengthen relationships and assist families through separation.  Key work tasks include:

  • Identifying problem-solving options and strategies and providing assistance in clarifying clients’ problems and disputes.
  • Undertake thorough and comprehensive intake and assessments, including screening for safety concerns and determining suitability for Family Dispute Resolution.
  • Offering information about post separation parenting and provide assistance to develop parenting plans.

Required Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for appointment, prospective candidates must be eligible to enrol in the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution.  The appointee must be willing to complete this qualification and register as an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner with the Federal Attorney-General’s Department.  This training will be provided as part of the position.  Knowledge of the effects of separation and divorce on families is essential as is an understanding of the concepts and philosophy of family dispute resolution including mediation and conciliation.  Other essential criteria include the ability to think creatively and to develop innovative solutions to issues as they arise, excellent communication skills, well developed interpersonal skills and the ability to rapidly build rapport with clients.
